Weaning baby from breastfeeding
If you are looking for some seriously fun interaction with your baby, you can look forward to the baby development milestones that will come in the seventh month. The days of endless changing, feeding, rocking, and not much else are truly over as your baby has figured out how to get a reaction out of you and anyone else they know in their life. Baby may be crawling at this point, and is willing to taste just about anything they can reach, so be ready to be kept busier than ever before as baby makes his or her way through the world.
One baby milestone you can consider a milestone for yourself is that babies love it when things repeat. They want something familiar and they want it all of the time. This is why a good routine is very important. It is also why you may want to make sure you know all the words to a few good songs that you would be willing to sing over and over again. You may get sick of hearing the same thing repeatedly, but they can not get enough. Don’t be surprised if you are greeted with a ‘mama’ or a ‘papa’ this month, though not all children will speak this early.
You may have already been practicing that repetition, as your baby may wave bye-bye or hello to you and other family members, and will love simple games like Peek-a-Boo. This is because you have been doing these things over and over and they find great joy in learning that some things will happen time and time again. This can also mean, however, that baby wants to take over some familiar tasks, even if they are things they can not do. This can lead to frustration and some tantrum activity, so be patient and help them if they allow you to do so. Remember the trial and error is the way all people learn, and now is as good a time as any to show baby that they can keep trying until they get it right.
Baby is moving around more and more this month.
Some babies can pull themselves up and move around the room by holding on to different pieces of furniture. They may attempt to stand on their own, but may prefer to stand holding your hands. This is a great time to show them how their little legs can work by walking them, just be careful of putting too much stress on arm joints. Some babies can build leg strength in stationary toys that old them upright, but be careful if you think about using a walker. These are not generally considered safe any longer and some feel they delay walking rather than encourage it.
You may or may not be thinking of weaning baby from breast if breastfeeding.
That is a personal choice for many parents and if you wish to do so, it is certainly a good time to start. Baby will have to go to sippy cup or formula bottle, which may not may not be hard. They should, however, be learning the routine of eating three meals a day and having snacks in between. Some suggest feeding children when they appear to be hungry, but a routine can help Mom and Dad keep track of how much baby is eating and can help with that every important routine that allows babies to thrive.
Breastfeeding moms often wonder what to do if they feel like weaning even when other moms with babies their age seem to be going ahead full steam with breastfeeding. While the American Academy of Pediatrics tells us that breastfeeding up until a baby has turned one is ideal, that is not the best for everyone for various reasons. Breast milk is full of everything that baby needs, but even at seven months you can be sure baby has had great benefits from your breast.
Each child is going to feel differently about giving up the breast. It may even vary between your children if you have more than one. Heidi Murkoff, author of What To Expect the First Year says, “Some children seem to never lose their attachment to nursing; they are happy to keep at it well into toddlerhood. Others show less interest and start to self-wean before their first birthday (it’s common between nine and 12 months).” What does that mean for you? It means what you decide is best for you and your baby is going to be just fine. Also remember that weaning from the breast does not mean you lose those special feeding times, as some babies move from breast milk to formula until their solid food eating habits are well established.
